PELICANS VISIT

On November 3, 2003 a large flock of brown pelicans easily recognizable by their distinctive pouched elastic bills, roosted on the rocks on the Central Coast.  They stayed for several hours and were seen soaring over the ocean demonstrating their unique plunge-dive method of fishing.

Adult pelicans average weight is eight pounds or more with wingspans up to seven feet.  Although not typical, one brown pelican reportedly lived to be thirty-one years old.

Although brown pelicans are not rare on the Central Oregon Coast they are not a common sight.
