HIGHLIGHTS OF DEPOE BAY HISTORY

Ó

INTRODUCTION

Depoe Bay is a small town on the Central Oregon Coast.  Over time Mother Nature has changed it from a lively fishing village to a tourist town.  As of the year 2003 it has a population of just less than 1200. That does not tell the true story as it has many weekend visitors, second homeowners, and tourists.

Tourists may drive straight through Depoe Bay, perhaps being required to stop at the sole traffic light in town, or they may stay a night, a week or more.  They may stop at the lengthy parking strip abutting the ocean and watch gray whale migrations, spectacular storms, fishing boats or an occasional Coast Guard rescue.  Some may go whale watching or fishing on one of the local charter boats.  Others may meander through shops while munching on fudge, salt water taffy or caramel corn, all locally prepared, then go home with a souvenir such as a coffee cup or sweat shirt.  Or they may eat at a unique and interesting restaurant while peering east of the Depoe Bay Bridge at what is claimed to be Worlds' smallest harbor.

So drop in the next time you drive the Oregon Coast.  There are always interesting and unique things going on in Depoe Bay as it's history will verify.
