MUSSEL
By Leonard K.
Eaton
A hardy mollusk is the
mussel.
He won’t let go without a
tussle.
From the piling and exposed
rocks
Where he’s attached with
feet and socks*.
Nobody knows what the mussel
says
When told of his future in
bouillabaisse.
*The “socks” are actually byssal threads secreted by a gland at the base of the foot. Scientists are trying to synthesize this material to use as a marine adhesive.
